Wigley Racing Report, Silverstone



This weekend was round 11 of the British Superbike championship at Silverstone GP circuit where the sun was shining and the team had a high determination for success. Friday’s practice session started on the right foot as we got some laps under our belts and worked our way down to the lap times we had previously set during the 2014 season. Kurt stayed out for the entire session and each lap was an improvement. Matt spent the session refreshing his memory of the circuit markers he obtained last year.

Qualifying 1 proved to be difficult during the beginning stages because of the circuit being so long, it was difficult to piece together an ideal lap as one mistake on one bend would ensure that the lap wasn’t competitive. Kurt pitted half way through the session to gather his thoughts and have a rest; at this point he was in late the late 20’s. Kurt left the pits for his final 3 laps of the session and managed to get a tow taking chunks out of his time and on the final lap put himself into 13th place. Matt also had a brilliant session after finding a tow off another competitor, he wasn’t far from Kurt but on the last lap he got pushed to 16th which was still a great outcome. The whole team were thrilled with Fridays result.

Qualifying 2 soon came around on Saturday which was the fall to the weekend. After a red flag on the first lap the session was reduced to account for the time lost. Once the session began both of the lads struggled to put together their lap time although setting faster sectors. Kurt improved his ideal lap time by almost half a second which would have put him around P16, however his actual time only progressed by 0.03 of a second which he was gutted about leaving him to start the race from 20th. Matt aimed to improve his consistency as the initial stages of the weekend were a big hit and miss, however, he didn’t manage to improve his lap time from Friday’s qualifying resulting in a fall to 22nd for the race but he kept high spirits.

Sunday’s sunny race was soon on its way after the team had worked hard getting the bikes prepped ready for the race after morning warm up. Matt didn’t have such a good start leaving himself with a fair amount of work to do during the initial stages of the sprint. His aim was to break away with the leading group which initially wasn’t the outcome but he soon began battling his way up the field. With some close racing Matt turned around his race putting the Sorrymate.com Yamaha in 13th. Kurt once again had a cracking start making up 4 positions on the first lap. He continued to battle his way forward and moved from group to group catching up with others that had gapped him during the initial stages of the race. Kurt had a fantastic race which kept the whole team on their toes as each lap he made up positions with some aggressive challenges. All of a sudden Kurt was in 8th place with two laps remaining; he lost out in a slip stream down the straight putting him back to 9th. On the final lap with 4 bends remaining Kurt made the shot at claiming back 8th position when he lost the front on the brakes and crashed out. Gutting for everyone as the whole team has worked so hard.  Kurt was okay after the crash and during the race set his new personal best for Silverstone with and ideal of less than a second from the lap record. Matt also set his new personal best within the race so improvements all round.

It was a tough weekend with many mixed emotions for the team. On a fantastic side note we had a big success with the Cancer Research fundraiser having raised just shy of £400 with many signatures covering the bikes. This gives us a total of around £540 with donations received on Just Giving which we are all pleased about, less than half way to our £1,000 target.
